WHAT KIND OF RICE IS BEST FOR BAKING?

In my opinion, long-grain rice is the best baked for perfect rice.

Brown Long Grain Rice-cook time is usually longer than white rice…about 10 to 15 minutes longer.

White Long Grain Rice-cook time is usually around an hour.

Basmati Rice – White or Brown – both are smaller-grained and will take less time than long-grained varieties.

Jasmine Rice – the grains are small and will take less time to cook…35-40 minutes tops.

Minute Rice-this rice is meant to cook in an instant…I wouldn’t use instant rice in this cooking method.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH OVEN-BAKED RICE

Oven Baked Rice will go with anything…anytime! Chicken, fish, beef, ANY veggie you can think of, any dish you can think of.

Easy Baked Rice with Chicken Thighs – Combine rice, butter, and chicken broth in a small Dutch oven then place the chicken thighs on top of the uncooked rice mixture. Sprinkle the dry Lipton’s Onion Soup mix on top. Cook for 1.5 hours at 350 degrees.

Easy Baked Rice Casserole with Ground Meat – Add cooked ground sausage, beef, or turkey to the cooked baked rice. Add some cheese, delicious! Bake an additional 15 minutes and serve with a side salad.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH OVEN-BAKED RICE

Chicken Shrimp Sausage Gumbo is, of course, the perfect mate to rice!

Instead of bread…try this savory Drip Beef over rice instead! Yum!!

If you’re not in the mood for Cornbread with these Ham and Beans; serve over baked rice for a complete combo of protein and carbs.

Homemade Bacon Tomato Soup is absolutely delicious with baked rice.

Ingredients for baked rice on a butcher block

4 SIMPLE INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup of rice – I used brown rice for his dish but white is good too.
  • 1/2 stick of butter or 4 tablespoons of butter – if you want it more savory use a whole stick.
  • 2 cups of Chicken Broth – you can use vegetable, beef, or 2 cups of water.
  • Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix – I use Lipton’s, I have tried others and I always go back to Lipton’s.

2 STEP-BAKED RICE

STEP ONE… Place all the ingredients in a heavy ovenproof pan. A Dutch Oven or a glass baking dish covered with heavy-duty aluminum foil is fine.

STEP TWO… Bake at 350 for an hour or until the broth has been absorbed by the rice.

WHAT IS THE BEST DISH TO COOK OVEN-BAKED RICE IN?

MUST HAVE KITCHEN GADGETS👇

I prefer a small Dutch Oven over a glass baking dish because of its weight (cast iron core) and a tight-fitting lid. A large glass baking dish like a 9″x13″ Pyrex casserole dish or a deep round Pyrex baking dish will work. use heavy-duty aluminum foil to cover. Note: Be sure to really secure the foil to the dish!

INGREDIENT ADD-INS AND SUBSTITUTIONS:

Add-Ins

  • Fresh, jarred, or sliced mushrooms are wonderful added to this baked rice. If using fresh…slice and sauté in the heavy oven-proof Dutch oven.
  • After the rice is baked, snip and stir in green onions, fresh parsley, cilantro, dill, sage, or oregano. If you don’t have fresh herbs use dried herbs.
  • Sauteed celery, onions, peppers, crushed garlic, fresh herbs, or even lemon zest!
  • For a quick and easy Spanish Rice: cup up fresh jalapeno, add 1 teaspoon of chili pepper and cumin, 1/4 cup of salsa, and grated cheddar cheese on top.
  • Serve it as a main dish by adding a seasoned pound of browned ground meat or turkey. Add it to the hot baked rice and let it rest with the lid on for about 5 minutes.

Substitutions

  • Beef or veggie broth can be substituted for chicken. If you want to use cubed or paste bouillon instead of chicken broth from a carton, use the same amount of water as you would chicken broth in a can. Note: dissolve the bouillon in the water first.
  • Use a tablespoon of olive oil instead of butter. It’s not as savory but definitely healthier.

LEFTOVER BAKED RICE

Leftover rice is one of the most useful food items in the fridge. Use is in soup, bean burritos, and homemade fried rice!

Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. When ready to use just reheat straight to the microwave for a minute or two.

If reheating on the stovetop, add a little water, cover with a lid, and turn the heat to low for 10 minutes.

TIPS FOR THE PERFECT BAKED RICE

If you need the rice to bake faster, add hot water or broth to the unbaked rice mixture. Be sure to stir making sure all the grains are separated before you bake. This method will cut down on bake time by 20 or 30 minutes.

If adding frozen veggies to cook with the rice like broccoli or peas, use 1/4 cup less broth or water.

When the baked rice is done, fluff with a fork, not a spoon before serving.
